The New Zealand Certificate in Creativity is a half year programme that allows you to express your creativity using the latest techniques and technology.

Learners will engage in a range of skills that develop both individual creative practice and collaborative practices. Learners will develop skills in animation, drawing, filmmaking, set development, digital painting, photography, printmaking, art history and professional development. Learners will be using the latest techniques and processes to build their creative practice, while also understanding the historical context for their studies. Learners will build on their existing practice and be set up to be able to work in community/industry on creative project or further their knowledge in further study.

NZCC101 Drawing/Animation (Level 4) 10 Credits 

To introduce students to a range of approaches to cross-disciplinary practice-based research exploring drawing concepts and concerns through animation. 

NZCC102 Painting/Digital (level 4) 10 Credits

To introduce students to a range of approaches to cross-disciplinary practice-based research exploring painting concepts and concerns through digital painting. 

NZCC103 Printmaking/Photography (level 4) 10 Credits

To introduce students to a range of approaches to cross-disciplinary practice-based research exploring printmaking concepts and concerns through photography. 

NZCC104 Sculpture/Film (Level 4) 10 Credits 

To introduce students to a range of approaches to cross-disciplinary practice-based research exploring sculptural concepts and concerns through filmmaking. 

NZCC105 Art History and Theory (Level 4) 10 Credits

To introduce students to a range of art historical and theoretical contexts and critical approaches to the visual and screen arts with a focus on cross-disciplinary practices developing basic academic skills through active documentation and via a practice-based research approach.

NZCC106 Professional Practices (Level 4) 10 Credits 

To introduce students to basic professional practices associated with the screen arts.

Graduates have gone on to further study at Degree and Postgraduate level.

Graduates from this programme currently work in a large variety of work in the creative industries including: animation, game design, film, photography, concept creation, concept art/design and visual arts.  

School leavers:

Students must be a minimum of 17 years at the start of their course and ideally have NCEA Level 2.

Applicants should demonstrate a keen interest in applied arts as a realistic career choice or personal development.

All applicants are required to submit a portfolio and take part in an interview process.

Mature Applicants:

Applicants over the age of 20 years at time of enrolment will be considered where they can demonstrate the ability to succeed in a programme. Examples of demonstration of ability to succeed are the provision of evidence of successful completion of a programme of study at level 1 or above in a related discipline and/or employment in the related sector for one or more years. They may be admitted subject to programme regulations approved by the Head of Faculty in consultation with the Programme Manager as appropriate. Personal commitment and a belief in one’s own ability to succeed are important personal traits and will always be taken into consideration during the selection process.

English language requirements

If English is not your first language, or your previous education was not taught in English, you’ll need to provide evidence of your English language ability.

You can meet this requirement through one of the following:

  • NCEA Level 3 with University Entrance
  • An International Baccalaureate Diploma or Cambridge A Level where teaching and assessment were completed in English
  • CELTA or CertTESOL
  • Completion of primary education (equivalent to New Zealand Years 1 to 8) plus at least three years of secondary education taught in English in New Zealand, Australia,
  • Canada, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the United Kingdom or the United States
  • At least five years of secondary education taught in English in New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the United Kingdom or the United States
  • Completion of a tertiary qualification taught in English from a tertiary education provider in one of the countries listed above. This includes a bachelor’s degree, graduate certificate, graduate diploma, bachelor honours degree, postgraduate certificate, postgraduate diploma, master’s degree or doctoral degree

An approved English language proficiency test that meets the requirements below

English language test requirements

  • IELTS General or Academic: 5.0 overall, with no band below 5.0
  • TOEFL iBT: 35, with a writing score of 14
  • TOEFL pBT: 500, with TWE 4
  • PTE Academic: 36, with no band below 36
  • Cambridge English: B2 First or B2 First for Schools, score 154, with no skill below 154
  • OET: Grade C or 200 in all sub-tests
  • NZCEL: Level 3 General\
  • LanguageCert: B2 Communicator International ESOL Written (LRW) Pass, with at least 25/50 in each skill, and Spoken (S) Pass
  • Trinity ISE: ISE I, with at least Distinction in each band

English language test scores must be achieved in a single test within the two years before enrolment.

To satisfactorily complete the New Zealand Certificate in Creativity, and be awarded this qualification the student must successfully achieve:

  • A minimum of 60 credits in accordance with the programme schedule for the New Zealand Certificate in Creativity (Level 4)
  • The student will normally be expected to complete the New Zealand Certificate in Creativity (Level 4) full-time over one semester or part-time over one year

Please Note: Students failing to attend for 80% of the timetabled programme hours may forfeit Zero Fees entitlement.
